How Deep Should You Microneedle for Hair Loss?
Share
Needle depth is where microneedling beginners get nervous, and for good reason. Too shallow and you waste the session, too deep and you risk scarring and pain that makes you quit. The research and real-world use point to a sensible middle, and deeper is not better. Here is how to choose.
The depth that has evidence
The studies showing microneedling helps hair growth, including the 2013 work by Dhurat and colleagues, used needle lengths in the moderate range rather than the deepest available. The injury needs to reach the layer that triggers a healing and growth response, but it does not need to go as deep as possible. More depth past that point adds pain and risk without adding benefit.
A practical starting point
Most men do well starting on the shorter end and working up only if they tolerate it. Shorter lengths are nearly painless, need no numbing, and can be done more frequently. Moderate lengths hit harder, may want numbing cream, and are done less often. Beginners should start shallow, confirm their scalp tolerates it, and only then consider going deeper. Why deeper is not better
Going too deep risks pain, bleeding, and scarring, and scar tissue is the opposite of what you want on a scalp you are trying to grow hair on. The goal is a controlled healing response, not maximum damage. Consistency at a comfortable depth beats occasional aggressive sessions you dread.
The timing rule still applies
Whatever depth you pick, do not apply RU58841 or minoxidil right after needling, because deeper channels mean more systemic absorption. Separate them per the microneedling protocol and run your RU58841 and minoxidil serum on the off days.
FAQ
What needle depth is best for hair loss?
A moderate depth that reaches the layer triggering a healing response is enough. The studies used mid-range lengths, not the deepest, and beginners should start shorter.
Does deeper microneedling grow more hair?
No. Past the depth needed to trigger the response, more depth only adds pain and scarring risk without more benefit.
Do I need numbing cream?
Usually only at longer needle lengths. Shorter lengths are typically tolerable without it.
